THE MAYES GUITAR DUO

Joseph Mayes has performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe on both guitar and lute. He is
a professor of music at Rowan University where he heads the Guitar and Early Music programs and holds degrees
from Thomas Edison College and Shenandoah University. He is well known, not only as a performer, but as an
outstanding source of guitar scholarship witnessed in his many publications in both periodicals and music
publishing houses. He has studied with some of the most notable guitarists of the century including Andres
Segovia, Carlos Barbosa-Lima, and Jose Tomas. He has recorded 4 solo CD’s of both guitar and lute music.
Kathleen Mayes holds degrees from Rowan University and Drexel University. She studied with well-known Segovia
disciple Larry Snitzler of George Mason University and Julian Gray of Peabody Conservatory. She serves as
Adjunct Professor at both Rowan University and Burlington County College where she teaches classical guitar and
music history.
The Mayes classical guitar duo brings together a wealth of as soloists and members of respected ensembles.
The duo is remarkably versatile as demonstrated not only by the diverse styles of music that they play, but also in the variety of instruments they bring to their programs: classical guitar, terz guitar, 19th century guitar, renaissance lute, archlute and the Neapolitan mandolin.
They have recorded three CDs together: The Schoole of Musicke, Sketches for Two, and their 2008 release And the Romance Goes On. Kathleen Mayes plays a guitar built by Paul Jacobson and a lute built by Larry Brown. Joseph Mayes plays a guitar of his own construction and a lute built by Larry Brown.
